The lemon law in California protects consumers who have purchased or leased a new or used vehicle within the manufacturerās original warranty period. In California, the lemon law requires a manufacturer to promptly repurchase or replace a vehicle when the dealership is unable to repair the vehicle after a “reasonable” number of repair attempts or within a reasonable amount of time.

What is considered a reasonable opportunity to repair the vehicle?
The California lemon law does not specifically state the number of repair visits necessary to satisfy this requirement. The āreasonable opportunity to repairā element is determined on a case-by-case basis in relation to the severity of the vehicle’s defect. For safety-related defects, this could mean as little as two repair attempts. If the defect is not safety-related, the law generally requires more repair attempts. It is important to note that this requirement may also be satisfied if the vehicle is in the repair facility for a cumulative total of more than 30 days (not necessarily all at one time).
